The 1970s were one of London’s most fertile decades for fashion. This generation of British designers — Ossie Clark, Thea Porter, Bill Gibb, Jean Varon and others — were rewriting the rules entirely. Independent designer-makers producing original, often small-run pieces with strong personal design signatures: bias-cut crepe, botanical prints, and embroidery drawn from the folk revival, Art Deco revivalism, and the decade’s restless romanticism.

Their historical references ran deep. Thea Porter looked to the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East; Bill Gibb wove together Scottish tartans, Renaissance silhouettes, and Art Nouveau ornament; Ossie Clark channeled 1930s Hollywood through a distinctly Chelsea lens. These were designers who treated fashion history as a living archive — not pastiche, but genuine dialogue across centuries.
