Vintage 1970s Zandra Rhodes Hand-Painted "Shell" Dress

Zandra Rhodes

A stunning example of Zandra Rhodes's early 1970s work, from the 1972-73 "shell collection". This rare and special dress would be a beautiful dress for a beach wedding.  Hand-painted abstract squiggles and lines that resemble sea elements with pearlized seashells attachments.  Open fluttery sleeves.  Slight empire waist (elasticized).  Ruffles and bows around the waist.  Full, maxi skirt.  Slips on over the head.

The original tag is missing but it still has its original hand-painted Zandra Rhodes hanger.  We suspect this dress was custom made for it's original owner.

Label: missing (but obviously Zandra Rhodes)
Fabric: Silk (slightly stiffened because of the all-over hand-painting)
Circa:  1970s (probably 1972-73)
Condition:  Overall excellent.  The dress shows light, normal wear.  There are two teensy brown spots just below the front waist (see last photo).  The waist elastic appears to have been replaced at some point and is very tight.

Shoulders: open
Bust:  open/ best for an A/B cup (sleeves are open from the shoulder to the waist)
Waist:  26" - snug 30"
Hips: 42" (lining measurement)
Bodice Length:  15" (slight empire/high waist)
Skirt Length: 36"
Best fits an XS / S
